Ault was a member of the Gay Liberation Front in New York in the 1970s, co-founder of the 1979 March on Washington, and board member of the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center in New York in the 1980s.

Wilson was a pioneer of the alternative theater movement in New York during the early 1960s, and in 1974, he co-founded The Other Side of Silence (TOSOS), the first professional gay theater company in New York City.
